Dashboards
Arrange charts, funnels, and Sankeys on a grid, and organize everything in your project into folders.
A dashboard is a grid of cards: charts, tables, funnels, and Sankeys that share one date range, segment, and set of filters. A project can have as many dashboards as you like, and the Dashboards page keeps them organized in folders next to your notebooks and standalone charts.
The Dashboards page
Open Dashboards in the sidebar to see everything in the project:
| Type | What it is |
|---|---|
| Folder | Groups other items. Folders can hold other folders. |
| Dashboard | A grid of cards. The built-in dashboard has a lock icon. |
| Notebook | A notebook with writing and live charts. |
| Chart | A chart or table that isn’t on a dashboard or in a notebook. |
| Funnel | A funnel that isn’t on a dashboard. |
| Sankey | A Sankey that isn’t on a dashboard (web projects only). |
Charts, funnels, and Sankeys that live on a dashboard or in a notebook aren’t listed on their own. Find them inside their dashboard or notebook in the file tree.
Each row shows the item’s name, a short summary (a dashboard’s description, a funnel’s steps, or what a folder holds), its type, and when it was last modified.
Creating items
Click Create (or press C) and choose what to make. The new item is created in the folder you’re looking at.
- Dashboard and Folder ask for a name
- Notebook opens a blank notebook straight away
- Chart, Funnel, and Sankey open their builder. Once saved, they’re standalone items in the current folder.
Folders
Click a folder to open it. The breadcrumb at the top shows where you are; click any part of it, or the .. row, to go back up. The address bar keeps the open folder, so you can share or bookmark a link to it.
To file an item in a folder:
- Drag it onto a folder, onto the .. row, or onto a folder in the breadcrumb
- Or open its ⋯ menu, choose Move to…, pick a folder, and click Move here
A folder can’t be moved into itself or one of its own subfolders.
Deleting a folder never deletes what’s inside. Its contents move up to the folder that held it.
Searching and sorting
Type in Search everything to search names and summaries across all folders. Each result shows the folder it lives in. Items can’t be dragged while a search is active.
Click the Name, Type, or Modified column header to sort by it, and click it again to flip the order. The sort menu next to the search box offers more:
| Sort by | Orders |
|---|---|
| Name | A to Z, Z to A |
| Type | Folders to Sankeys, Sankeys to folders |
| Last modified | Newest first, oldest first |
| Date created | Newest first, oldest first |
Folders first (on by default) keeps folders above everything else whatever the sort. Your choice is remembered in your browser and shared with the file tree.
Item actions
Open an item’s ⋯ menu to:
- Pin to sidebar or Unpin from sidebar (dashboards). You can also click the pin icon on the row.
- Edit (funnels and Sankeys): open the builder
- Rename or Move to… another folder
- Duplicate (not available for folders)
- Delete
Deleting a dashboard also deletes the charts on it. Deleting a notebook deletes the charts, funnels, and Sankeys made in it, but not ones it only embeds. Deleting a chart, funnel, or Sankey removes its definition; collected events are not affected. The built-in dashboard can’t be deleted, and neither can a project’s last dashboard.
Pinned dashboards
Pinned dashboards are listed in the sidebar under Dashboards, so you can switch between them in one click. Switching keeps the selected date range.
- Pin or unpin a dashboard from its row on the Dashboards page or from the file tree
- Drag the handle on the right of a pinned dashboard to reorder the list
- Right-click a pinned dashboard to Edit its name and description, Duplicate it, Unpin from Sidebar, Copy to Other Project, or Delete it
Dashboards created with the + next to Project in the sidebar are pinned by default (untick Show in sidebar to skip that). Dashboards created on the Dashboards page are not.
The built-in dashboard
Every project starts with a built-in dashboard filled with charts for its template. It’s marked with a lock icon and can’t be edited or deleted, though you can rename it. To customize it, click Duplicate dashboard in the banner at the top and edit the copy, or start from scratch with New dashboard.
Adding cards
Click Create at the top of a dashboard (or press C) and choose Create Chart, Create Funnel, or Create Sankey (web projects only). The builder opens, and when you save, the new card is added to the dashboard. An empty dashboard shows the same options in the middle of the page.
See the Chart Editor, Funnels, and Sankeys for how to build each one.
Editing the layout
Click Edit Layout (or press E) to rearrange cards:
- Drag a card to move it. Other cards make room.
- Drag a corner to resize it
- With a card focused, use the arrow keys to move it one cell, or
Shift+ arrow keys to resize it
When you’ve made changes, a bar at the bottom shows Unsaved Layout Changes. Click Save changes to keep them, or Cancel to discard them. Leaving edit mode with unsaved changes asks you to confirm first.
Layouts can only be edited in a desktop-sized window. On smaller screens, cards stack to fit.
Date range, segments, and filters
The toolbar under the dashboard’s title applies to every card on it:
- Date range: a preset or a custom range. It stays selected when you switch to another dashboard.
- Segment: only count people in a saved segment
- Filters: narrow every card to events matching a property, for example Country is Germany. Suggested values come from your recent data.
Some cards set filters for you: clicking a row in a table or list filters the whole dashboard to that value. The selected range and filters are part of the page address, so a copied link opens the dashboard exactly as you see it.
Card actions
Open a card’s ⋯ menu to:
- Edit it in its builder
- Duplicate it on the same dashboard
- Copy to or Move to another dashboard
- Copy link to the card. The link opens the dashboard and scrolls to it.
- Copy ID of the chart, funnel, or Sankey
- Embed URL (charts on public dashboards)
- Export CSV of the data it shows
- Delete it
Fullscreen
Click the expand icon on a card to open it fullscreen. Charts show a summary of their data (total, average, peak, and low), a sortable data table, a breakdown by series, and any event markers in range. Funnels open their full analysis. Press Esc or click the back arrow to return to the dashboard.
Public dashboards
When a project is public, you choose which of its dashboards are visible to everyone in Project Settings. Charts on a public dashboard can be embedded elsewhere. Funnels and Sankeys on a public dashboard are only shown to project members.
Visitors who aren’t members switch between public dashboards with tabs at the top of the page instead of the sidebar.
