Sankeys

See the paths people take through your site, where they come from, and where they drop off.

A Sankey draws the journeys people take through your site as bands flowing from step to step. Each column is a step, each box is a page or event, and the width of a band shows how many sessions went that way. Use it to answer questions like “Where do people go after the pricing page?” or “How do visitors reach signup?”

Sankeys follow the pages and events of each session, so they’re only available in web analytics projects.

Creating a Sankey

You can create a Sankey from three places:

  • Dashboards page: click Create and choose Sankey. The Sankey is standalone and filed in the current folder.
  • A dashboard: choose Create Sankey from the dashboard’s create menu. The Sankey is added to the dashboard as a full-width card.
  • A notebook: add a Sankey block and choose New Sankey. See Notebooks.

The builder shows a live preview with the options next to it. Give the Sankey a name and save. If you leave the name empty, it’s named after what it shows, such as After /pricing or Paths to /signup.

Describe the Sankey in the AI field at the top instead, for example “Where do people go after the pricing page?” or “Paths through the docs, grouped by section”. On an existing Sankey, describe a change. You can undo an AI change until you edit something else.

Options

Journey

OptionWhat it does
Starts atWhere paths begin. Without a start, paths begin at each session’s first step.
Ends atKeeps only sessions that reach this step, and lines paths up on it, so the columns count back from the end.
GoalEach step shows how many of its sessions reach the goal later. Unlike an end, it keeps the sessions that never do.

Start and end points can use * as a wildcard, like /checkout/*. When a session reaches a start or end point more than once, choose whether its first time or last time counts.

Steps

  • Steps are: Pages and events (the default), Pages only, or custom Events only
  • Page names: name pages by their Path (/pricing), Host and path (example.com/pricing), or Page title
  • Event names: add a property’s value to custom event names, so click becomes click: Sign up
  • Group similar URLs (on by default): folds IDs and trailing slashes, so /users/42 and /users/7/ both become /users/:id
  • Merge repeats (on by default): reloads and several events in a row on one page count as one step
  • Only these steps: only matching pages and events are steps. Other steps disappear and the steps around them join up. The start, end, and goal always count.
  • Leave out: pages or events to remove from every path

Sessions

  • Follow visitors: joins all of a visitor’s sessions in the range into one journey, instead of drawing each session on its own
  • Hide one-step journeys: leaves out visitors who saw one page and left
  • Split after: ends a journey after a quiet spell of 5 minutes up to 1 day. Never (the default) keeps the whole session together.

Filters

Only journeys that match every filter are drawn. Filter on Step (any page or event the session reached), Country, Device, Browser, OS, Referrer, UTM source, UTM medium, UTM campaign, or Language. Up to 10 filters can be added.

Rename steps

Rules rewrite step names with regular expressions, applied in order. Steps that end up with the same name merge into one, and \1 refers to a captured group. Presets cover common cases:

  • Drop query strings
  • Drop language prefixes like /en/
  • Group by first path segment
  • Group numbered pages, like /page/2

Each rule shows a preview of a name it changes.

Detail

  • Rows per step: how many pages or events each column shows before less common ones fold into Other (5 to 30, 8 by default)
  • Minimum size: steps reached by fewer sessions join Other, even when there’s room for them

Reading a Sankey

The toolbar above the chart controls what it shows:

  • Flow draws the Sankey. Top paths lists the most common whole paths instead.
  • Steps: how many columns to draw, from 2 to 10 (5 by default)
  • Color bands by: split each band by a property such as country or device. Bands are colored by each session’s first value, and a legend lists each value’s share.
  • Values lead with: show the Number or Share of sessions on each step
  • Show drop-offs: draw sessions that stopped as their own Dropped off steps
  • Show “Other”: draw the step that collects less common pages and events
  • Compare with the period before: show how each step and band changed against the previous period of the same length

Step details

Click a step to see where its sessions came from and where they went next, and how many stopped there. From the details you can:

  • Start paths here or End paths here to redraw the Sankey around that step
  • Exclude it from every path

Sankeys on a dashboard

A Sankey card follows the dashboard’s date range, segment, and filters. When the dashboard shows all time, the Sankey uses its own range from the builder. Open the card fullscreen or click through to explore it.

Funnels and Sankeys on a public dashboard are only shown to project members.

Exploring a saved Sankey

Open a Sankey to explore it. Anything you change there, such as the step count or a new start point, stays on your screen until you click Save changes. Click Reset to go back to the saved version. If you can’t edit Sankeys, the changes are only seen by you and never saved.

Click Edit Sankey to open the builder with all options. Open the ⋯ menu to Delete Sankey. Deleting a Sankey only removes its definition; collected events are not affected.
